Note to self, when importing your MacBook’s .profile file to use as your Ubuntu box’s .bashrc, remember to do one of two very important things: either delete the .profile file when you’re done, or make sure it doesn’t export $HOME as your MacBook’s $HOME directory. This will save you many many MANY hours of frustration and puzzlement arising from why Gnome insists on looking for a user who does not exist.
