My brother hosted a LAN a couple days ago, and due to how our network is secured, he had to add a bunch of his friends to our router’s DHCP list. Since we’ve had neighbors jumping onto our network before, I made sure to get out of him a promise to resecure the network after his friends left (ie. removing them from the DHCP list was my interpretation).
It’s been a day and a half, and he’s done nothing. So I remind him. He remembers and starts trying to remove them. When he runs into technical troubles, he starts demanding that I help him, since I’m the one who “wants them removed in the first place”. Alright, that’s true, but since he was the one who promised to resecure the network after they left, shouldn’t he have an obligation to get it done? I don’t mind helping him, but taking a hostile tone with me and demanding I assist him because I’m the only one with an interest in resecuring the network seems incredibly rude to me.
Whatever, a quick restart of the offending client machine (the PS3 it turns out), and our network is up and running, sans the 4 extra machines on the DHCP list.
I also took the opportunity while doing all of this to finally upgrade my Ubuntu box to the newest Hardy Heron alpha. I was reminded to do so with the news today that the next iteration of Ubuntu’ll be named Intrepid Ibex. I’m still reeling from their refusal to go with Hungry Hippo for the last release.
